What is Laser Therapy

LASER is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Lasers emit a specific wavelength of a high-energy, intense beam of (coherent monochromatic) light. Wavelengths are measured in nanometers (nm) and are determined by the medium used within the laser (e.g. glass, crystal, gas). The medium absorbs the electrical energy and focuses it into one specific wavelength of light energy. The wavelength determines how deep the laser will penetrate, and each wavelength of light is absorbed or attracted to a different chromophore. Chromophores are a part of the molecule responsible for an object’s colour. Because of this, a laser can treat specific conditions while leaving the surrounding tissue intact.

Laser Therapy Treatments

Laser skin resurfacing is among the fastest-growing treatments in medical aesthetics as it’s a non-invasive, comfortable and effective treatment. Lasers are very effective at treating popular skin issues such as acne, blackheads, cherry hemangioma, enlarged pores, fine lines, flushing, freckles, hyperpigmentation, keratosis pilaris, melasma, port-wine stain, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), redness, rosacea, scars, seborrheic keratosis, skin tags, spider angioma, spider veins, sunspots, telangiectasia, venous lake, warts, wrinkles and more.

How do Lasers Work

Each laser does different things depending on its wavelength and depth of penetration. At Vitality Laser Clinic, we use the Alexandrite laser (755nm), which acts more on the shallow layers of the skin, and the Nd:Yag laser (1064nm), which penetrates deeper. The chromophore for the Alexandrite laser is melanin, and the chromophore for the Nd:Yag laser is haemoglobin, water, and melanin to a lesser degree. Our laser is safe for all skin types and is great for collagen induction therapy, anti-aging treatments, laser hair removal, and so much more.
